Tip: Log home design

20 Essentials of Great Log Home Designs

Read the full entire article at the link below
http://www.loghome.com/20_essentials_of_great_log_home_designs/articles/523

Everything you need to know to create a warm, comfortable, attractive home.

Over the last 30 years, architects and designers have taken log cabin design to places our founding fathers could scarcely imagine. Yesterday's one-room cabins have become full-fledged homes—even castles—sought out by do-it-yourselfers and boardroom barons alike.

Yet no matter how far-flung the application, log homes remain a direct link to things that are earthy and natural. We see them. We feel them in the very marrow of our bones. Logs choose us as much as we choose them.

Because these homes are what they are—dynamic, vigorous, natural—there is much to learn from them and about them when it comes to planning and decorating. You'll find many quirky challenges, but also exciting opportunities. Together, they form the core of your journey to home sweet log home.

To make that journey a little easier, here are 20 design essentials I have discovered during my years photographing, writing about and living in log homes.

1. Your Decor Should Fit with Your Logs

2. Drywall Isn't a Dirty Word

3. Tall Walls Need Visual Relief

4. Let the Trees Speak

5. The Sun's Kiss Can Be Dangerous [to interior and exterior]

6. Don't 'Oversize' Your Furnishings

7. Every Room Needs a Point of View

8. Muffling Your Walls Will Improve Acoustics

9. Your Rooms Should Be Versatile

10. Log Homes Crave Extra Lighting [better believe it]

11. Brightening the Walls Helps, Too

12. It's OK to Play with Your Decor

13. Color Can Accent and Unify [use same color 3 times]

14. Fabrics and Textiles Should Match the Setting

15. Flooring Should Fit with Its Function

16. Consider Collectibles for Your Cabin

17. Hanging Wall Art Takes a Little Creativity

18. Nature Belongs in Your Log Home

19. Decorating Doesn't Stop at the Back Door [outdoor spaces]

20. There's Always Room for Improvement

Tip: Starter idea for home and garage

Starter idea for your log or timber frame home

As you might guess, it is common for me to receive telephone inquiries about log homes. During these conversations, I eventually learn that clients would like to have a garage or storage building in addition to their log or timber frame home. It is common for people to not build the log home and the garage at the same time. The timing for construction usually revolves around "cash" issues.

When this occurs, a garage with an apartment over [i.e, FROG] frequently comes into the conversation. At that point, I suggest the following economic answer to their "timing" issues.

A solution: Build the garage or shed with apartment over using our RuStick system.
In this system, we build the garage using log siding outside and inside, where appropriate. Thus, the apartment in particular takes on the character of a log home from the inside. Obviously, we take time to match the garage to what they "believe" to be the style and stain color of the future log home or timber frame home.

Construction of the log home or timber frame home can take place later when it fits the budget. This is a construction strategy that saves money and provides our clients with their rustic getaway at the same time. Eventually, the apartment becomes their "guest" quarters when the manor house has been completed. It makes economic sense in many cases. -jh

Sansin Timber-Tec

Attention Log Home Builders

Keep your logs clean and protected in the yard.

• protects against surface staining and weathering
• industrial-strength UV protection
• no wash-out

Sansin Timber-Tec – available in 3 formulas.

• Timber-Tec M30 – enhances color of freshly-peeled logs
• Timber-Tec C20 – allows wood to golden mildly
• Timber-Tec T40 – highly water-repellent for long-term protection

LIMITED TIME OFFER!

Buy 5 pails and get 1 free

Expired April 29, 2011

Call 1-800 767-4916 for details or to order.

Spring is here, and your yard is probably full of carefully selected logs and timbers as you get ready for the building season – valuable wood that needs to be protected against the elements. With Sansin Timber-Tec, your wood can get the protection it deserves. Sansin Timber-Tec is an industrial strength wood primer designed to protect your logs against surface staining and weathering – even before they leave your yard.

Now you can protect your logs with Sansin Timber-Tec and save!

For a limited time, buy 5 pails of Sansin Timber-Tec and get 1 pail free.

Sansin Timber-Tec is formulated with modified natural oils and resins, carried deep into the wood by one of nature’s commonplace miracles – water. As the water evaporates, Sansin Timber-Tec bonds directly with the wood substrate for long-lasting protection. Sansin Timber-Tec bonds with your logs and timber to form a protective shield that repels condensed water, while allowing water vapor to escape – dramatically improving dimensional stability and allowing wood to adjust naturally to moisture levels in the environment.

Because Sansin Timber-Tec’s unique formula lets wood ‘breathe,’ it can be applied to green as well as seasoned timber. Apply Sansin Timber-Tec to your freshly peeled logs and enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will be protected from building through to shipping and construction. Using Sansin Timber-Tec means your logs will look better when they leave your yard.

Like all Sansin products Timber-Tec is environmentally friendly, non-flammable and user friendly. Now available in two transparent formulas: M-30, a colored concentrate that enhances the natural color of freshly-peeled white wood logs; and C-20 a clear concentrate that allows wood to golden mildly.

Find out how to take advantage of this limited time offer and protect your logs for less.

Call us at 1-800 767-4916 or contact us directly via e-mail at Jack@LogHomesByJack.com.

Visit us at www.LogHomesByJack.com [see the Stain button] or www.sansin.com to find out more about Sansin Timber-Tec.

Sincerely,
The Sansin Corporation
Sjoerd Bos, Vice-President

P.S. In addition to logs and timbers, Sansin Timber-Tec is perfect for wood joinery and millwork projects. In fact, it works well on almost any wood surface that needs protection from weathering.

P.P.S. Offer expires April 29th, 2011. Call now to protect your logs for less!

Sansin Enviro-Stains

Eco Friendly Stains for Wood Products

Jack Hutslar is the Authorized Dealer for Sansin Enviro Stains.

Based on old European formulas, Sansin stains penetrate to the cellular level, thus permitting the wood to breathe when it dries. That means no moisture is built up under the surface. No rotting occurs from the inside-out.

Sansin Enviro Stains are great for log homes, wood siding, decks, docks, fences, and shakes. Cleaners and Sealers are available as well.

Sansin Enviro Stains are environmentally friendly with very low VOCs. VOCs are those highly volatile solvents like gasoline and certain glues that make your head spin when you accidentally get a strong whiff. They are highly flammable and not kind to the environment. Stain products with high VOC content are slowly being removed from the marketplace by the EPA.

Sansin FAQs

Sansin FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions.

Where can I purchase Sansin products?
Call LogHomesByJack.com at 800 767-4916. We will ship products directly to your door, regardless of where you live. Visit the Stain buttons at www.LogHomesByJack.com.

Can I use SDF over Classic?
Answer: Yes, but this is not recommended for logs that see excessive wetting or surfaces that demand a coating that breathes freely such as logs and larger timbers. Always wash using Sansin Multi-Wash as preparation for the new or maintenance coating.

SAnsin PTL Discontinued
SANSIN DEC reformulated.
can it be used on non pressure treated lumber?

Answer: Yes! DEC performs outstandingly on many wood species. Keep in mind that the color is somewhat stronger than with other Sansin wood coatings.
Note: PTL discontinued. Important protective properties for flat surfaces incorporated into DEC.

Can I mix Classic and SDF in the same can?
Answer: No, the base formulas are inherently different. Although they may appear to be compatible, we cannot guarantee performance results.

Will adding more water to my Sansin EnviroStain affect its quality?
Answer: Adding water will reduce the quality of the product. If you still wish to add water (e.g.. for ease of spraying) than add NO MORE than 5%. Always add water to stain rather than stain to water.

How do I dilute color?
Answer: Use the Clear UV formula with the respective product to dilute color or increase clarity. Naturals should not be diluted more than 20% using the appropriate Clear UV formula. For example, use Classic Clear UV to dilute Classic Light Natural

Can I apply more than one coat of SDF on my deck or siding?
Answer: Apply up to two coats on decks and siding. DO NOT apply more coats at one time as this could form a film.

My stain is not the color I expected, what can I do?
Answer: Adding the respective Clear UV formula will lighten or increase clarity; or, order a different color to mix in with your existing product to create the color you desire; or, return the product to a SANSIN COLOR CENTRE DEALER for adjustment.

Paint & Stain Remover: How do I use it inside?
Answer: It should not be used inside, the residue is to difficult to remove without rinsing, we recommend only using it outside

Aqua-Gard: can I use it over painted concrete?
Answer: Aqua-Gard needs to penetrate into the surface to be effective - this is what allows it to remain breathable. Aqua-Gard is not designed to perform on top of paint or coatings.

Drips: how do I control them?
Answer: When applying exterior Sansin coatings we recommend completely saturating the surface with product to the point where it will absorb no more. This will naturally cause the product to slightly run. Then, as per Directions For Use, back brush the surface to eliminate any streaking by spreading the runs and drips evenly.

How long will my Sansin product last?
Answer: Base performance is indicated on product Directions For Use. Individual product performance depends on a variety of factors such as exposure, wear and tear, quality of application, quality of wood and location. Your local representative may be able to provide a more specific product estimate.

Why do some Sansin products need to be coated with Clear UV where as others do not?
Answer: Clear UV in its respective product has considerably stronger UV resistance and is normally used as the last coat to avoid strengthening color. Sansin Classic and DEC formulas require three coats to achieve complete saturation of the wood cell to create a water repellant surface; Classic Clear UV is normally used for the third coat to maintain a clear light color while building up the necessary protection.

When do I maintain my surface for optimum performance and color retention?
Answer: A maintenance coat is required when surface erosion becomes visible, or when the surface color lightens noticeably. Erosion may first become apparent on the grain whereas color loss typically shows first on southern exposures.

What kind of coverage can I expect from my Sansin product?
Answer: There is no standard answer because coverage varies depending on the wood species in question. With exterior coatings, it's best to get as much product into the wood as possible. A cedar deck could use an average of 1 gallon per 200-300 sq ft. per coat of Sansin DEC whereas a one-coat formula like Sansin SDF could use up to 1 gallon per 100-200 sq ft. Pricing is dependant upon the selected formula - see the appropriate product Directions For Use for more details.

Why is Sansin more expensive than some competitive products?
Answer: Sansin uses the finest pure resins and ingredients, with no cheap fillers or paraffin - incorporating the best UV-protection technology available. Sansin is a premium, environmentally-friendly wood coating that protects wood while allowing it to breathe. Plus, Sansin's exceptional ease of maintenance means trouble-free beauty for your home for years to come.

What are the benefits of a non-film forming product vs. a film-forming product?
Answer: Breathability, ease of maintenance and sustainability.

What is the difference between Classic & DEC?
Answer: Dec is designed for horizontal surfaces and Classic for vertical surfaces. The formulas are compatible but Sansin DEC has a lower solids content plus performance characteristics that allow for easier penetration on a horizontal surface.

Can I just have one product for all my surfaces?
Answer: No. Different surfaces can demand distinctly different characteristics from a coating. For example, a large mass of wood such as a log naturally retains more moisture than a 2x4 - which in turn means it will decay unless the wood can breathe. A deck needs more water repellency and UV protection than a wall. Sansin has a family of products designed for optimum performance depending on the characteristics of the wood surface in question.

Sansin produces several stains for log home and other woods. What can be applied over what?
Answer: ENS will go on over all Sansin products plus stone, metal and glass.
SDF will cover Classic and DEC.
Classic will cover DEC
DEC
Performance may suffer if, for instance, DEC is applied over SDF.

Bug Juice by WW Environmental

Bug Juice
Bug Juice is an insecticide paint additive designed to eliminate crawling and flying insects on interior & exterior surfaces. The active ingredient in Bug Juice is Deltamethrin.

Bug Juice:

• can be applied on most exterior and interior surfaces, including kitchens and pantries.

• does not repel insects.

• is a contact pesticide which poisons the insects through their pads and begins to work after an insect makes contact with the treated surface.

• kills crawling and flying insects ranging from ants to mosquitoes and crawling insects ranging from cockroaches to silverfish.

• will not affect the color, surface appearance or drying time of the coating it is mixed with.

• has no odor.

• will typically last for two years when mixed with stains or paint.

• helps breaks the homing cycle of insects.

• must be mixed with stain or paint.

• can be added to any oil or latex based paint, stain, or sealant.

To apply, wash down exterior surface to remove dust, dirt and organic matter.

Once applied, wash down exterior treated surfaces with water once or twice a year to remove any buildup of pollen and dirt.

Bug Juice is the result of a six year research and development program conducted by the manufacturer, Walla Walla Environmental. The product is registered with the US Environmental Protection Agency for both interior and exterior use. The product is safe for consumer use when used according to directions. It is approved for use in hotels, restaurants, hospitals, kitchens and pantries.

One 8.3 oz bottle per five gallon container of paint or stain.

Cannot be mixed with water to apply.

Mix in no more Bug Juice than can be used in 3 hours.

Bug Juice is extremely cost effective when compared to the cost of regularly scheduled temporary pest control measures. During the past year the EPA has been in the process of eliminating all of the "cost effective" pesticides for consumer use - therefore you are left with safer, but more expensive pesticides. At the present time Bug Juice is the only insecticide paint additive available. .

Bug Juice

Summary:

• Wash log walls before using to remove dust and organic matter.
• Bug Juice must be mixed with stain or paint.
• Add to last coat of stain or paint.
• Mix in no more Bug Juice than can be used in 3 hours.
• Wash down walls twice a year in gulf states to improve effectiveness
• Effective for 2 or 3 years.

$49.75 per 8 1/3 oz bottle.
Treats 5 gallons

Tip: Tools and their uses

Toolology 101 for Log Homes

DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it.

WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, ‘Oh sh — ‘

ELECTRIC HAND DRILL: Normally used for spinning pop rivets in their holes until you die of old age.

SKILL SAW: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short.

PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.

BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.

HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.

VICE-GRIPS: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race.

TABLE SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity.

HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper.

BAND SAW: A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminum sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge.

TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST: A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.

STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms.

PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.

HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to make hoses too short.

HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.

UTILITY KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while in use.

Source: One of those emails that show up from a friend periodically.

Question for Log Man Jack - stain maintenance

Q Hey Log Man Jack, How often is it necessary to stain log homes.
ANSWER. Maintenance of the exterior of log homes is done by a process called staining. Conventional wood sided homes are commonly painted. Paint does not allow the wood grain to show and that is an attractive feature of log homes.

The number of years between maintenance coats of stain varies with the product used. Some products require repeated staining every year or so. Other products require two coats of stain plus one coat of clear coat with maintenance coats over a longer interval of time – usually three to six years. Yet other products suggest that two coats of the same product be applied initially. Then add a maintenance coat in 3-4-5 years.

Staining can be done with a bucket and brush or a sprayer. When a sprayer is used, the stain penetrates into the cracks and crevices more evenly than with a brush. It should be noted that when a sprayer is used, the windows and doors should be covered with a plastic wrap. The specialists seem to prefer brushing.

This initial staining will begin to wear off due mostly to sun, rain and snow. The need to apply maintenance coats of stain is most evident on the afternoon and evening side of log homes. It is necessary to restain weathered logs or wood to keep them looking fresh. Depending on the stain product used, this might need to be done again in three, four, five or six years. That is, your log home will need a new coat of stain plus clear coat. There are products on the market where the stain and clear coat can be mixed. Obviously, this reduces your work load and two-coat products are usually less expensive than three coat products.

Why log homes are dark inside

= =
I receive periodic complaints from shoppers that log homes are dark inside.

Here are a few reasons why this might be true. They are:

Small windows. Heavy curtains. Big porches. Small rooms. Inadequate interior lighting. Dark interior stains. Dark furniture. Dark cabinets. Inadequate Planning.

The solution to darkness is: larger windows, sheer curtains or no curtains, more ceiling can lights, light or natural interior stains, lighter furniture colors, lighter oak-type cabinets, and light colored paint on the sheet rock portions of the interior walls.

When planning your log home, ask Jack about other suggestions for a brighter interior.

Tip: Squirrel repellents

Critter repellents for squirrel and deer

It has been suggested to me that critters like squirrels and deer seek salt. That may be why they are chewing on your home. So, perhaps you can add a small salt lick in your yard away from the house as a way to draw critters toward what they are really seeking. I have not verified this.

Commercial answers to chewing critters.

Try Critter Ridder and Deer Off.

Critter Ridder irritates the paws and mouth of a variety of animals.

Deer Off adds eggs smell to the other repellents in this mixture.

Woodstream web site is www.HavaHart.com

See the animal button to find the product that best fits your need.

Order on line or call Customer Service at 800 800- 1819, ext 455.

When calling them, please remind them that you learned about their products from LogHomesByJack.com.

But wait, there is more.

Go to www.bitrex.com to see another repellent line. It is called Bitrex.

Your own brew. You can concoct your own brew of hot stuff or look through the Old Home Remedies books.
