Ask Jack: Stain question from Montana

Stain questions and answers by email from a client in Montana …

Yes. We are located in Forest, Virginia around 5 hours from the East coast at Norfolk VA or Myrtle Beach SC.

A note about stain and seal ... I am a rep for Sansin Enviro Stains. A Canadian company. We ship anywhere. Do not believe that elevation or climate is a concern with Sansin Stains. Temperature is as Sansin Stains are water based. It will freeze = need 40+ degree temperatures for shipping, staining and drying.
Sansin Enviro Stains do NOT seal the logs. Sealing the logs can capture moisture and that can lead to rot. Sansin Stains penetrate and protect. It stabilizes the wood [logs and decks] and provides UV protection. Sansin Penetrates. It will not peel, blister or scratch. 70 stock colors. Darker is better than lighter.
Coverage is around 200sf per gallon as a rule. Used Classic +UV guard on our log home. One Maintenance coat every 4-6 years. They have different formulations for exterior logs and fences [SDF or Classic], porches and decks [DEC], interiors [Purity], furniture [ENS] and tinted cement [AquaGuard] plus caulk and chinking. See www.Sansin.com

Avoid oil based stains. Some will peel, blister and scratch. High VOC content is a problem for the EPA and may lead to future maintenance issues related to VOC content and egg shell finishes. Great for furniture. Not so good for log walls and decks.
