Have not settled on a floor plan that you like. Try this. Draw circles on paper that show where you want the great room or living room, dining room, kitchen, hallway, master bedroom suit, other bedrooms, closets, other bathrooms, utility room, porches, decks. Do not get bogged down with dimensions, yet. Just move the circles around. Ditto for a second floor and an unfinished or finished basement. Take into consideration your views, porches, decks, driveway and garage. Remember, form follows function.

DIYers Tip: What we offer for self builders

More people that you might think are interested in building their own log homes. We offer five helpful bonuses for self builders.

• First, I have a flyer about our Construction Seminars. They are for builders and self builders. I highly recommend that self builders attend the next one, which will be in 2009.

• Second, I will give you our Construction Manual on CD. It takes you through all of the detail work.

• Third, the logs are precut. This makes some of the work easier.

• Fourth, we provide a wall chart that tells you where the numbered logs go. It is like paint by the numbers, only the logs are heavy.

• Fifth, we will be on call to give you help if and when you run into any situations that you cannot sort out. There are usually two or three places where you might have questions or concerns. Remember, people who build their own log homes are quite common.

Give me a call after you have reviewed the information package from me and we can chat or sit down and go over the details. I will bring along some floor plans and a copy of the old Construction Manual so you can see what it contains.

You can do it. It also helps to get your friends and relatives involved.

Normally, a $2,500 deposit is required to begin preparing your floor plan drawings. During March 2013 only, the process can begin with a $500 deposit. This is not a discount off the $2,500 deposit.

When putting your home on the market, consider the value in painting the walls, particularly if they are old, stained, dinged or painted in a color that only you might appreciate. A second option is to replace worn and outdated carpet. Finally, declutter [i.e., move “stuff” to storage] and then add a few well placed mirrors, pillows and candles. Give it that new "just baked cookies" aroma.
