Cheap is not good and good is not cheap
I was discarding some old papers and came across the following quote by John Ruskin. It is well work keeping in mind as you shop around for all manner of items, including log homes and timber frame homes. He wrote:
- - - - -
It’s unwise to pay too much . . . but it’s worse to play too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money . . . that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot -- it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run. And if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better . . . by John Ruskin
- - - - -
A few more quotes by John Ruskin [1819 - 1900], British author, essayist, critic
- There is scarcely anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse, and sell a little more cheaply. The person who buys on price alone is this man's lawful prey.
- In order that a man may be happy, it is necessary that he should not only be capable of his work, but a good judge of his work.
- Say all you have to say in the fewest possible words, or your reader will be sure to skip them; and in the plainest possible words or he will certainly misunderstand them.
- The highest reward for man's toil is not what he gets for it, but what he becomes by it.
- What we think, or what we know, or what we believe is, in the end, of little consequence. The only consequence is what we do.
- When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece.
- You will find that the mere resolve not to be useless, and the honest desire to help other people, will, in the quickest and delicatest ways, improve yourself.
- In order that people may be happy in their work, these three things are needed: They must be fit for it. They must not do too much of it. And they must have a sense of success in it.
- We require from buildings, as from men, two kinds of goodness: first, the doing their practical duty well: then that they be graceful and pleasing in doing it; which last is itself another form of duty.
- Let us reform our schools, and we shall find little reform needed in our prisons.

2008 Annual Honest Abe Dealer Convention
.
.
Honest Abe Log and Timber Frame Homes hosted the 2008 Annual Dealer Convention at Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville recently. Sally and I have attended event for the third time. If you have not been to the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and enjoyed their three interior atriums, add it to your list. Here are a few highlights from the convention . . .
Well over 100 dealers and their families attended the convention. We were delighted to hear several vendors mention “integrity” as one of the cornerstones of their relationship with the staff at Honest Abe.
It was announced that a new 6x12 D log with dovetail corners is now available along with the economical 6x8 D log. These log styles compliment our selections of 8x8 D and round logs, 6x12 flat logs, 6x10 chinked logs and 10 inch round logs.
Sally and I were honored to receive a Top 5 Dealership Award in 2007 by Honest Abe Log Homes.
Dealers with 25, 50, 75 and 100 sales were identified. Those are phenomenal achievements.
Dinner Friday evening was held on the stage of the new Grand Ole Opry. Honest Abe Log Homes is one of the long time radio sponsors of the Grand Ole Opry. Our speaker for the evening was Ralph Emery, long time radio and television host of numerous programs over the years that focused on the stars at the Music City. His treasury of stories about the celebrities who have graced his stage and studio were memorable.
But wait, there is more . . .
Flooring. Here at LogHomesByJack.com, we have added flooring to our offerings. We now have 25,000 selections – all at discount prices. Wood flooring. Eco-green flooring. Engineered flooring. Laminate flooring. Linoleum, Carpet. Eco-green carpet. Tile. Call Jack at 800 767-4916 to set up an appointment to visit our showrooms in Roanoke, Greensboro and Raleigh.
Sansin Enviro Stain. We are very proud to offer stain for your decks, docks, fences, wood siding, log walls and furniture. Sansin stains penetrate to the cell level of wood and strengthen it. It does not lay a film on the surface of the wood to lock in moisture build up [causing rot problems].
- Sansin PTL stain can be applied immediately to new pressure treated decks.
-
- Add Sansin Purity stain to your interior wood and log walls. It will prevent food and finger blemishes and odors from penetrating the wood.
Jack and Sally Hutslar have been log home dealers for over six years. We are based at Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia and serve the 8 county Roanoke Valley area plus the North Carolina Piedmont Triad from Kernersville NC.
