FYI: Roof systems for one story log homes

As a general rule, one story log home walls are built with an eight foot tall stack of logs. With a 6” x 8” or 8” x 8” log, this comes out to 13 courses of logs.

If you are tall, say over 6 feet tall, you may be able to stretch and reach the ceiling. This is roughly the top height of the volleyball net. The standard low ceiling does not offer much clearance when hang down lights and ceiling fans are added.

There are two ways to solve this low ceiling [i.e., roof] issue.

First, one or two course of logs can be added to your walls. Depending on the style of log, this will add eight to 12 inches of headroom per course. Naturally, this adds dollars to your material package.

The second and more economical option is to build a vaulted ceiling/roof system. This can be added to any standard wall to cap your logs. It can be accomplished with scissors trusses as well as our conventional 2x10 and heavy timber [exposed beams] roof systems shown above.

Plan ahead. You are welcome . . . jack
