Jack is working as usual via cell phone, email and messenger.

The latest word from Honest Abe Log Homes is that we have had clients send in their deposits. Builders are awaiting their material packages to be delivered. Builders, deliveries, trades people and our sub contractors are working while practicing safe distancing.

The Honest Abe cutting schedule is booked up to mid April right now. In “normal” times, we can have your material package on your job site in 45 days or so. But first, we must have an OK on your plans plus your 50% deposit. The balance is due before your material package is off-loaded. We are still pretty much working on that same schedule.

During this slowdown, it is a very good time to get with me [Jack] via cell phone or email or Messenger. We can focus on your questions, ideas, floor plans, options, budget, material package and timetable.

Energy Efficient Log Homes

The term “Thermal Mass” refers to the capacity of log walls to hold and transfer heat in winter, cold in summer, when compared to surrounding outside temperatures. 

Conventional homes and buildings heat and cool the interior space surrounded by walls. Log Homes actually heat and cool the log walls, the wood. Logs act as a passive energy system.

Turn the thermostat down in the winter at night and the cold outside weather pushes warm air in the logs into the interior. The reverse occurs in the summer outdoor heat when the logs are more cool on the inside.

This means Green Energy Savings with renewable resources => trees => logs.

Our personal experiences in a very cold winter climate are

 - - - it takes about 24 hours to heat up the logs in a cold zero to 10 degree unattended cabin in upper Michigan. The logs soak up the heat in the first 24 hours. After that, a comfortable temperature is maintained with a normal heating routine, even in 20 below zero temperatures.

BUGS Bugging You? 

There are two slightly different products that can be used against bugs.

[1] BUG JUICE is a contact insecticide. It is mixed in the top coat of paint or stain.  Does not work in water. Kills bugs in about 3 hours or less when they walk on any coated surface, inside or outside. Effective life of about 3 years. The idea is to eliminate the new bug offspring. Human and pet friendly. Cost is around $49 to treat 5 gallons plus applicable sales tax plus shipping.

[2] NBS30 is a repellant. Can mix it in water and spray it during their time of heavy activity. Effective life is 6 weeks or so. Coverage depends on your mix ratio. Cost is around $45 plus applicable sales tax and shipping.

[3] Mold Buster is a product that goes in paint or stain. Cost is around $20 plus applicable sales tax and shipping.
